UK Wedding Photography Prices & Packages

You can spend anything from pretty much zero to £10,000 for a UK wedding photographer – and if you look worldwide you can pay even more!

What’s the difference between the £10,000 and £395 photographer?

Why such different prices?

For dinner, you can buy a cheap burger or a 2 Michelin Star work of art.

In the same way, the quality of wedding photographers varies wildly.

You get what you pay for, on the whole.

Average photography prices

Most couples spend 5-20% of their wedding budget on their photographer, depending the importance they place on quality.

Location affects price, but a North West wedding photographer is a good average for the UK.

Putting all of that together, the average cost of a wedding photographer is around £1200.

What affects the price?

Outside of quality of photography – which affects price the most – these factors may also affect what you pay.

Location

Wedding photography prices are also affected by location and other factors – you will pay considerably more for a London wedding photographer than coverage in a quiet village in Wales, for example.

In fact, many couples getting married in the South find that an equivalent photographer from elsewhere in the UK is cheaper, even when expenses are considered.

Style

Type of photography affects price too. Typically, you’ll pay more for a fine-art wedding photographer compared with a more traditional approach.

Season

Time of year is the final part of the equation. If you’re having a winter wedding, some photographers will charge a little less, although in recent times winter weddings have become more popular so this is becoming less common.

If you have a budget which will only stretch to a photography up to £750, how can you make the most of it?

While £750 seems a lot of money to most people for a days work, it doesn’t actually buy a day – it buys about a week once you take into account all that a photographer must accomplish.

Now when you take into account a typical photographer might do 30-40 weddings a year, and has considerable business costs, the hourly rate is about £10ph. That’s just 25% above the minimum wage in the UK.

This is important because, if you’re choosing a photographer in this budget range, you should prepare yourself with knowledge to help you find the best you can.

Top tips then are:

  • Go to see at least 3 photographers so you can compare.
  • Ensure your photographer has shadowed another, more experienced photographer. If not, they could be missing essential knowledge.
  • Find out how many weddings they will have covered by the time of your wedding. Ideally it should be more than ten.
  • Ask to see some printed work and full wedding days. If they have can’t, it might suggest they aren’t serious.
  • Make sure they have a full set of backup equipment and are fully insured.

What can you expect in packages?

Wedding photographers have a variety of packages options. Second photographers, printed images, wedding albums and pre-wedding shoots are common choices.
Learn more about each of these.

Most photographers now offer high resolution downloadable images and they will allow you to print and share them. It’s the starting point for most packages.

Some photographers still only offer low resolution or watermarked images in order to increase the cost of your wedding – be wary of this.

Some photographers offer downloadable high resolution files while some offer USB’s. They are both equivalent options.

Typical cost – £included

Albums are still popular with couples, but less so that they have been in the past.

Albums come in all sorts of shapes and sizes; more traditional, modern & minimal styles, 8″x8″ to 18″x12″, 10 to 50 pages and with many cover options.

Some photographers include an album with their package, but this is less popular today.

Typical cost – £included to £2000 with £500 being average

Some photographers will prefer to shoot alone (I do) and others will prefer to have someone with them. A second photographer can provide new angles, but typically a single photographer can produce very similar results.

Some include a second photographer in their package while others charge additional amounts.

Typical cost – £included to £3000. Average £200-£500.

Couples are unused to being in front of the camera and it helps to get some practice. A pre-wedding or engagement shoot can help, in addition to providing the couple with beautiful photos of themselves.

Some photographers include them in their packages, but it’s not particularly popular.

Typical cost – £included to £500, with £200 average.

Couples still want to view their wedding photos every day and prints and canvases are the most popular options for this.

Some photographers will include prints and canvases, but more often they are extra cost options.

Typical cost – £2-£10 for a small print, £50-£100 for a large print, £50-£500 for a large canvas.
